Chickens in a cage……

Driving on the interstate I come up behind a load of chickens on their way to their demise…..

the notion struck me in active addiction we are those birds… and we put ourselves in a cage

shutting the door and locking it with hopelessness and despair

then other birds who were once in our predicament remind us that we put ourselves there and likewise we have forgotten that we have the key

the key of “ willingness”

that key needs to be cleaned and can only be used by the owner….  there are no duplicates

so the “free birds” tell us how they found their key and regained the courage and strength to use it

I was once a bird in a cage…. I stayed imprisoned by my mind for many years…. I am grateful for the birds that cared enough to help me see if I was willing and practiced the steps they showed me, I could open that door and never go back…

it was scary because I had grown accustomed to my confinement…..  but when the “free birds” came to visit they rekindled my forgotten memories of freedom and as time when on…… the more I wanted to return to a way of living that gave me choices.

this bird is free and I never want to be those chickens in a cage going …. to their demise

free…..almost david

Your analogy is spot on! I was told once that the door wasn’t locked, I just needed to accept that and surrender to push it open.
