I asked Alice what she kept in her bag that she haul’s around in a two wheel grocery cart and she said…” Well…. I have a few personal items that are none of your business…… couple of changes of clothes…… ball of stout string I sometimes use as a clothesline……my Bible….. few pictures of my former family…..toothbrush and toothpaste……couple bottles of hand sanitizer that I often bathe myself with if I find a nice warm place…. a towel that I use and wash out …… it eventually drys as I hang it on the cart and move around….if it rains I have a slicker and it has a hood….4 pairs of socks and 5 cans of sardines, box of crackers and matches for a fire if it’s cold…..a hammock that I sleep in and a tarp if it rains…… don’t tell anyone but I have a knife and I’ve shown it but never used it….. but I would.”

“I eat at one of the shelters but don’t sleep there….people steal things….I’m homeless but I’m not an addict or alcoholic….. just a stubborn old lady that doesn’t like people or rules….I keep to myself and pray for warm nights…..doesn’t help in the winter but the heat grates from the buildings downtown keeps me from freezing. Never felt like I found my place…..after awhile I stopped looking.  I have accepted my life and when I stopped thinking I could change it I just adapted…I’m not miserable or unhappy. Everyday is an adventure and the squirrels and the pigeons in the square are my family and they always are glad to see me and the little bits of things I save for them.”
