”Buddylicious”

Buddy was a stevedore who worked on the docks, i worked with him and he taught me a lot

taught me to appreciate life like the ”last bottle in the drop”and that the real deal about living was to appreciate what you got

ate beans in the morning ”cause gives you a little lift” and sardines at lunch with bread or chips, when the work day was over he went to his car and had a big chug of gin and smoked a cigar

i would watch him dig a few worms and put them in a can and grab his pole and and old wooden crate……………….he would sit and fish, sing and hum and if he felt like it he would spin you a yarn

he said life is ”licious” and it is kinda mean and most of the livin’ goes on in between and if you don’t squeeze out every little bit then ya miss out on the good stuff after it drops. i knows people that has a lot but it ain’t what they wants and it ain’t never enuf, and i knows peoples that have just enuf and theys always happy and shares what they got”

bathed in the river and washed his clothes after dark, lived in his car….worked hard and ”Buddylicious was a real gem of a man because he appreciated what he had and that was more than enough for him

i remember taking him a bottle after he got hurt on the dock and he said,

”you’s this man’s friend and he thanks you a lot and i hope you remember me’s foe everthing i is and specially foe everything i not”
